Eclectic Fever Comes To Oakland December, Thursday 31 At The New Parish!

The Bay Area’s most diverse NYE Party returns for its 3rd year. Now in its 3rd year, Maisha Productions’ successful New Years Eve event, “Eclectic Fever,” returns once more for an energetic, vibrant and unforgettable journey into the music of the African Diaspora, Latin and Brazilian Roots. After two fun-filled years in the SF Gift Center, where it held its own against San Francisco’s most lavish and extravagant NYE parties, this year’s event moves across the water to a new city and a new venue: The New Parish in Oakland’s Uptown district. With three theme rooms featuring DJs and live music going on simultaneously, “Eclectic Fever” promises to be the hottest way to ring in 2010 on both sides of the Bay.

The New Parish’s Main Floor has been rechristened “The Shrine” (a tribute to Femi Kuti’s famous compound/concert stage in Lagos, Nigeria honoring his late father, Afrobeat’s founder Fela Kuti) for the event, so it’s only fitting that the headliners are nu-Afrobeat band Aphrodesia, the first American band to play the Shrine.

Originally from the Bay Area (some members have since relocated to New York), Aphrodesia return home after touring in support of their critically-acclaimed new album Precious Commodity, which finds them venturing out into new sonic territory while refining their ensemble-based, groove-heavy sound.

Joining Aphrodesia in “The Shrine” will be Oakland’s own Kev Choice Ensemble, a powerful 10-piece ensemble with serious musical chops who encompass the black musical experience, from jazz to soul to hip-hop to funk; Boco do Rio, one of SF’s best Brazilian bands, who bring the Amazonian-style party vibe; and dance troupe Energia do Samba, who are sure to get the dancefloor dripping with sweat and overflowing with beauty long before the clock strikes midnight.

Also in effect: the “International Room,” featuring DJ Jeremiah and DJ Santero, spinning Afrobeat, Afro-house, Afro-Latin, Reggaeton, Salsa, Cumbia, and more; and the “People Room,” featuring DJs Cecil, Clai, and Be Brown (from one of Oakland’s most popular monthly parties, The People), spinning broken beat, jazz dance, Brazilian, soul, Afro-Latin, soulful house, nu-jazz, and underground hip-hop.

“I decided to move Eclectic Fever to Oakland because I have noticed it really is eclectic in ‘The Town,’” said DJ Jeremiah (who launches a weekly party, “Diaspora Rising,” in Oakland in January). “There’s an authentic multicultural vibe here, which is inclusive of all colors, races, and styles, so it seemed like a natural fit for this party, which is all about enjoying culture, rhythm and music from around the world.”

As with many past events by Maisha Productions, the party also supports a good cause: A portion of proceeds from Eclectic Fever will be donated to Under the Baobab Tree, a non-profit supporting sustainable education in Malawi. So come on out to The New Parish on NYE, bring your dancing shoes, and celebrate the dawning of a new decade.
